New wiring vs rewiring
| Scenario | Typical scope | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| New construction | Full installation: conduit, cables, board, fittings | Scheduled with the build programme |
| Rewiring | Strip-out old wiring; reinstate per current regulations | Building remains occupied during works |
| Upgrade | Add circuits, upgrade board, increase supply | May require KPLC load addition application |
Cost drivers
What affects your electrical quote.
Number of circuits & points
More circuits, sockets, lights and sub-boards mean more cable, conduit and time. We price per point for straightforward jobs and by scope for complex ones.
New wiring vs rewiring
Rewiring an occupied building requires careful planning to minimise disruption. Access to existing voids, the age of the structure and the extent of the existing installation all affect cost.
Board size & type
A larger board with more MCBs and RCDs costs more. Three-phase boards for high-load commercial sites are more expensive than single-phase domestic boards.
Cable routes & distances
Long cable runs in a large building, or runs requiring surface trunking where concealed routes are not possible, increase material and labour costs.
Backup power scope
A simple changeover switch is low cost. A fully automatic transfer switch with generator connection and sub-panel is significantly more. We quote based on what your load requires.
Site distance
Sites beyond Nairobi incur travel costs. We work countrywide and are transparent about this in every quote.
Timeline
From quote to certificate.
- 01Site visit & scope — 1 day. Quote within 3–5 working days.
- 02Procurement — materials typically sourced within 1–5 working days.
- 03Installation — 1 day for simple upgrades; 1–4 weeks for full rewiring depending on building size.
- 04Testing & commissioning — same day as installation completion.
- 05Compliance certificate — issued on completion and testing.
Compliance & licensing
All electrical work is carried out by EPRA-licensed electricians [licence class and number — to be updated] in compliance with the EPRA Electrical Installation Regulations and Kenya Bureau of Standards wiring standards.
- Electrical installation compliance certificate issued on completion
- Documentation accepted by KPLC, NCA and most lenders
- 1-year workmanship warranty on all installations
- Scheduled maintenance contracts available
Common questions
Electrical FAQs.
Yes. Under the Energy Act and EPRA regulations, all fixed electrical installations in Kenya must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor. Work done by unlicensed individuals is illegal, may void your insurance, and cannot receive a compliance certificate. All Chimtech electrical work is carried out by EPRA-licensed electricians.
An electrical inspection certificate (sometimes called an EIC or wiring certificate) confirms that the installation was tested and complies with EPRA wiring regulations. KPLC requires it for new connections, NCA for occupation certificates, and most banks for mortgage releases. We issue this automatically on completion of any new or rewired installation.
A typical 3-bedroom house takes 3–7 days to rewire, depending on the building structure, the number of circuits and whether the client is in occupation during the work. We confirm the timeline in the quote after the site visit.
