Solar installation

The right solar system for your load — installed right.

We carry out a free load assessment before recommending anything. Grid-tied, hybrid or off-grid — the system is sized from your actual consumption, not a standard package.

What we install

Every solar project we take on.

Grid-tied systems
  • Reduces your KPLC bill immediately
  • Grid exports excess power (net metering)
  • Lowest upfront cost of the three types
  • Best for urban homes and businesses with reliable grid
Hybrid systems with battery backup
  • Runs on solar first, charges battery, uses grid only as backup
  • LiFePO₄ lithium batteries for safety and long cycle life
  • Protects against power outages
  • Expandable as your load or budget grows
Off-grid systems
  • Complete independence — no grid connection needed
  • Sized for multi-day autonomy including cloudy periods
  • Ideal for farms, remote schools, lodges and homesteads
  • Avoids costly grid extension poles and cables
Solar water heating
  • Flat-plate and evacuated-tube collectors
  • Pressurised and gravity-fed systems
  • For homes, hotels and health facilities
Solar street and security lighting
  • All-in-one integrated units or separate panel + battery
  • Motion-sensing and dusk-to-dawn control
  • Roads, estates, schools, compounds
Monitoring & maintenance
  • System monitoring setup and handover
  • Annual inspection and panel cleaning
  • Scheduled maintenance contracts available

Cost drivers

What affects your solar quote.

Daily energy use

Your load in kWh per day determines the array size and battery capacity needed. We measure this during the site visit — not an estimate.

System type

Grid-tied has the lowest hardware cost. Hybrid and off-grid add battery storage, which is the largest single cost driver.

Roof or mounting structure

An existing concrete or metal-sheet roof is straightforward. Ground-mounted systems, carports or structures needing reinforcement add cost.

Battery technology & capacity

LiFePO₄ lithium costs more than lead-acid but lasts 3–5× longer with less maintenance. We quote both options.

Site distance

Sites beyond Nairobi incur travel and logistics costs. We serve all counties and are transparent about this in every quote.

Inverter brand & size

Inverter capacity must match your peak load, not just your average. We use proven brands with local service support.

Timeline

From survey to commissioning.

  1. 01Site survey & load assessment1 day — we visit, measure and confirm suitability.
  2. 02System design & quote2–5 working days after the survey.
  3. 03Procurement & delivery3–10 working days depending on equipment availability.
  4. 04Installation1–5 days depending on system size and site complexity.
  5. 05Commissioning & handoverSame day as completion — tested, documented and explained.

Compliance

Licensed & wired to standard.

All solar-electrical work is carried out by EPRA-licensed electricians [licence class and number — to be updated]. Systems are commissioned and documented to meet EPRA wiring regulations and Kenya Bureau of Standards requirements.

Grid-tied and hybrid systems connected to the KPLC network require a KPLC import–export agreement. We guide you through this process.

Warranty & aftercare

  • Solar panels — 10-year product warranty, 25-year performance guarantee (manufacturer)
  • Inverter — 5-year manufacturer warranty on major brands
  • LiFePO₄ batteries — 10-year or 6,000-cycle warranty (whichever comes first)
  • Workmanship — 1-year Chimtech installation warranty
  • Maintenance contracts — scheduled annual service available

Common questions

Solar FAQs.

System size depends on how much energy you use per day. A typical urban home with lights, fans and a fridge may need a 1–3 kWp system. A home with a water pump, air conditioning or a workshop needs more. We carry out a free load assessment before recommending any size.

Yes. Grid-tied and hybrid systems work alongside your KPLC supply. The solar system supplies power first; KPLC only kicks in when solar is insufficient (e.g. at night or on heavily overcast days). With a battery, you use stored solar at night before drawing from the grid.

Most residential installations take 1–3 days on site. Larger commercial systems may take longer. The main variable is equipment lead time — components typically arrive within 3–10 working days of the deposit.

At night, a grid-tied system switches to KPLC automatically. A hybrid system uses stored battery power first, then grid. An off-grid system relies entirely on the battery bank — we size this to cover your night-time and low-light use.

Yes. Kenya sits close to the equator and receives excellent solar irradiance year-round — Nairobi averages about 5–6 peak sun hours per day. Even during the rainy season, panels still generate power on overcast days, just at reduced output. We factor local irradiance data into every system design.
